Obituary for Joseph D. Koury, Sr.
Joseph D. Koury, Sr., 75, of Pottsville, passed away on Thursday evening surrounded by his family in Schuylkill Medical Center East Norwegian. Born in Pottsville on August 15, 1938, he was the son of the late Victor J. and Josephine (Jacobs) Koury. Joseph was a 1956 graduate of Pottsville High School and Penn State. He was the executive director of the Greater Pottsville Sewer Authority for over 30 years, retiring in 2007. Joseph was very involved with civic organizations, which included: the Pottsville Lions Club where he served as president in 1980-81; Rotary Little League; and Knights of Columbus. He was a recipient of the 2006 Distinguished Alumni Award from Pottsville High School. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Theresa "Toot" Patinsky. Joe is survived by his wife, Margaret "Peg" A. (Devitt), to whom he was married for 50 years; children: Joseph D. Koury Jr., husband of Kim, of Douglassville; Daniel J. Koury, husband of Sandy, of Pine Grove; Lorraine J. Koury, of Pottsville;Victor J. Koury, husband of Stacy, of Hamburg; grandchildren: Natalie, Jordan, Daniel Jr., Emma, and Gibson; brother, Peter M. Koury; and several nieces and nephews. The family would also like to recognize dear family friends, Mike Naydock and his late twin brother, Dave, who passed away in 2013. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 22nd at 11:00 a.m. at Lord-Bixler Funeral Home, Inc., 1818 Mahantongo St., Pottsville with Deacon Jack Quirk officiating. A viewing will be held on Monday evening from 6-8:00 p.m. in the funeral home and also, on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will follow in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery, Pottsville. The family request memorial contributions in Joseph's name be sent to Autism Society, P.O. Box 6683, Wyomissing, PA 19610.
