Obituary for Mary Ellen Whalen

Mary Ellen Whalen, 98, of Pottsville, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning in Schuylkill Center, Pottsville.

Born in Pottsville, on March 14, 1924, she was a daughter of the late John and Rebecca (Long) Bowers.

She was a 1941 graduate of Pottsville High School.

Mary Ellen was a member of the former First UCC, where she was a Sunday School teacher and very active with church activities.

During World War II she worked at the Army Supply Depot in Middletown; she was an operator for Bell Telephone Company; she helped with the family dry cleaning business; and then went on to work at the Walk-In Shoe Factory in Schuylkill Haven from where she retired.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Peter A. Whalen in 1972; brothers: John, Joseph, and Norman Bowers; and sisters: Arlene McIntyer and Gayle Ash.

Mary Ellen is survived by a daughter, Fay A. Whalen, of Tustin, CA; two sons: Peter A. Whalen, husband of Melanie, of La Quinta, CA; Robert J. Whalen, of Pottsville; grandchildren: John Luciano, husband of Kim, of CA; Mark Luciano, husband of Alice, of CA; great grandchildren: Matthew, Nathan, and Christopher; sister, Nancy Davis; several cousins; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 19th, at 11:00 a.m. at Lord-Bixler Funeral Home, Inc., 1818 Mahantongo St., Pottsville. A viewing will be held from 9:30 a.m. until time of service in the funeral home.

Interment will follow in Schuylkill Memorial Park, Schuylkill Haven.

In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions in Mary Ellen's memory be sent to: Hearing Loss Association of America, 6116 Executive Blvd., Suite 320, Rockville, MD 20852.
