Obituary for Jeune L. Hoffman
Jeune L. Hoffman, of Pottsville, passed away on Tuesday morning at Providence Place, Pottsville. Born in Otepopo in the South Island of New Zealand, she was a daughter of the late Louise (Marzahn) and David McPhail. As members of one of the founding families in New Zealand, the McPhail family lineage dates back to the 1860's when her grandfather emigrated there from Scotland. Jeune met her husband in 1942 when the Marines landed in Wellington, New Zealand. After his service in World War II, he returned to New Zealand and they were married February 16, 1946. After several months in New Zealand they returned to Pottsville. She worked for 16 years at the Van Heusen shirt factory and changed careers to caring for people with disabilities at Hamburg State School and Hospital for 17 years, retiring at age 62. For the next 15 years she offered her caring ways as both a paid care aide in the community and a volunteer for hospice care and visiting the "older" folk in nursing homes. Jeune was a very intelligent and independent person who enjoyed traveling and frequently went "home" to New Zealand to visit family and friends. She dabbled in oil painting and was an avid reader. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Hoffman in 2002 and to whom she was married 56 years; brothers: Bobby, Ivan, Les, Melvin, and Jim; sisters: Mazie and Ina. Jeune is survived by a daughter, Carol J., wife of James J. Pothering, of Llewllyn; a son, Erick Hoffman, husband of Laurel, of Berks County; and many nieces and nephews Services are private at the convenience of family.
