Obituary for Harold J. Bartholomew
Harold J. Bartholomew, 94, of Pottsville passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning. Born in Pottsville, on November 6, 1919, he was a son of the late Kathryn (Cantwell) and Harry A. Bartholomew. He was a lifetime member of St. John the Baptist Church, Pottsville and St. John's Holy Name Society. He was also a life member of the St. Bernard Society and a social member of the West End and Summit Station Fire Companies. Harold worked as a private coal hauler along with his father in the family business. Many still remember him as "The Coal Man". But, he is best known for his service as sexton and caretaker of St. John's #2 Cemetery, Pottsville for over 65 years. He was very devoted and passionate in all of his dealings at the cemetery and had an incredible memory of the families that he served. Harold also worked with Jack Carlin, a former funeral director in Pottsville in his earlier days. When you would meet Harold he always had a story to tell and loved to reminisce. In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by brothers: James J., George F. and his wife, Ann, and Charles F. and his wife, Marie; and sister, Kathryn A. Bartholomew. Harold is also survived by four sisters, Frances C., wife of Charles Lorenz, of Pottsville; Rita B., widow of John Foley, of Pottsville; Theresa T., widow of John Sencak, of Pottsville; Janet M., widow of Charles Whitaker, of Norristown; two brothers, Carl J. and Paul F. Bartholomew, both of Pottsville.; sister-in-law, Janet M. Bartholomew, widow of James, of West Chester; and 16 nieces and nephews; 36 great nieces and nephews; and 17 great-great nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Church, 913 Mahantongo St., Pottsville, PA, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 4th, with Rev. David J. Loeper officiating. A viewing will be held on Friday evening at Lord-Bixler Funeral Home, Inc., 1818 Mahantongo St., Pottsville from 6-8:00 p.m..and Saturday 9:30 a.m. until the procession leaves for church.
