Obituary for Frank Piccioni
Frank Piccioni, 91, of Pottsville, Pa died Saturday morning at Schuylkill Medical Center. Frank was born on October 1, 1923 in Auburn, Pa., the son of the late Luigi and Rosa (Mazzuca) Piccioni. He attended St. Ambrose School in Schuylkill Haven and Pottsville Junior and Senior High Schools. During World War II he served in the Pacific Theater as a gunner in the elite US Navy Armed Guard, protecting Naval transport ships. He was awarded individual and unit commendations for his performance during several major battles including the Battle of Okinawa. Following the war, he returned to Pennsylvania and worked for the Reading Railroad and the Aetna Steel Corporation. He later attended Barber School and opened a barber shop on North Second Street while also working at the Pottsville Provision Company, a family business owned by his brother Tony. His last place of employment was the Miners National Bank in Pottsville. Throughout his life he was an avid collector of local historic items and memorabilia and enjoyed making folk art for family and friends. On August 1, 1948 he married Regina Thomas of Port Carbon, Pa. He was a member of Saint Joseph and Saint Patrick Parishes. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well brothers Atilius, Peter, and Anthony and sisters Josephine Motto, Domenica Skolaski, Mary Fritz, Sandina Zimmerman and Julia Piccioni. He is survived by Regina, his wife of 67 years; four sons, Richard and his wife Kathleen of Geneva, NY, Francis of Pottsville, Pa, Michael and his partner Edward Getty of Princeton Junction, NJ and Robert and his wife Melanie of Rowlett, Tx, three grandchildren; Dr. David Picccioni of San Diego, CA, Christine Piccioni and her partner Matthew Ferrara of Seneca Falls, NY , Isabella Piccioni of Rowlett, TX and one great-grandchild; Matthew Piccioni-Ferrara of Seneca Falls, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 30th at 11:00 a.m. in St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, 319 Mahantongo St., Pottsville. A viewing will be held on Thursday evening from 6-8:00 p.m. at Lord-Bixler Funeral Home, Inc., 1818 Mahantongo St., Pottsville and on Friday at 9:30 a.m. until the procession will leave for the church. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Pottsville. Tributes in Frank's memory may be made to the Hillside SPCA, P.O. Box 233, Hillside Rd., Pottsville, PA.
