Obituary for Carl J. Bartholomew
Carl J. Bartholomew, "Chow", 89, of Pottsville, passed away on Wednesday morning in his residence with his family by his side. Born in Pottsville, on September 22, 1926, he was the son of the late Kathryn (Cantwell) and Harry A. Bartholomew. He was a 1945 graduate of Pottsville High School and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. Carl was a lifetime member of St. John the Baptist Church, Pottsville, where he served as an usher for 40+ years. He worked as a private coal hauler along with his father in the family business. Carl was very active in the Pottsville community where he was a member of the Schuylkill County #431 Knights of Columbus, where he achieved 4th degree ; Ancient Order of Hiberians in America, Inc., where he was named the "Irishman of the Year"; American Red Cross; Catholic War Vets #1051, a member since 1952; a 53 year member of Elks of Frackville; the Allen Rogowicz Chapter of the PA Sports Hall of Fame for his football achievements; a 57 year member of the American Legion Robert B. Woodbury Post #67; former Pottsville Club; Pottsville Joint Veterans Council; AMVets #180; League of United Veterans of PA, a member since 1973; and a volunteer at the Pottsville Hospital for over 20 years. In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by brothers: George, Charles, Harold, Paul, and James; and sister, Kathryn. Carl is also survived by four sisters, Frances C., wife of Charles Lorenz, of Pottsville; Rita B., widow of John Foley, of Pottsville; Theresa T., widow of John Sencak, of Pottsville; Janet M., widow of Charles Whitaker, of Norristown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Church, 913 Mahantongo St., Pottsville, PA, on Saturday, November 7th at 10:30 a.m. with with Rev. David J. Loeper officiating. A viewing will be held on Friday evening at Lord-Bixler Funeral Home, Inc., 1818 Mahantongo St., Pottsville from 6-8:00 p.m..and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the procession leaves for church.
